Google’s Aug. 1 Core Algorithm Update

Google August Update

It's been a little over a week since Google's latest update, nicknamed the Medic Update, here is everything known so far about it, including information from Google & insights from across the SEO industry.

The update from Google on August 1st has officially rolled out, this article will go over what we know so far about the update, who is most likely affected by the update, and what actions you should take if your ranking is affected.

Note: All Ranked members have had their websites updated to ensure no negative impact from this update.

Google has categorised this update as 'a broad, global, core update', but after much analysis & scans done so far, it seems like the core update mainly focuses on health & medical sites. Many sites were affected due to on-page specific issues, but Google says that even if your site is 'optimised correctly', there's nothing you can do apart from creating a great experience for your visitors & offer better content that's relevant to your site.

This update has gained the nickname 'the Medic Update' because of its primary target being the medical and health industry. This exact focus is something Google will not confirm.

What Google has Confirmed

Google has noted that this core update was a “broad core algorithm update” and that it does these updates “several times per year.”

Google has given its advice from the previous core updates, saying there’s “no ‘fix’ for pages that may perform less well, other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.” Google also said, “As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains. There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded.”

What You Should Do

If you haven't already, check your rankings to see if any keywords were affected by this update. If you have an SEO professional that can go over everything for you, you should be able to find areas to improve on. As a summary, websites should prioritise:

  • Consistent, unique content creation
  • Optimised for a better user experience (fast load times, no spam)
